The Hardwood Trends Of 2019
You can make your own hardwood whatever color you want, but if you’re hoping to sell your house soon after getting a new wood floor, you’ll want it to be up to date. The right hardwood floor can add up to 2.5% to the market value of your home. So what are the latest styles and trends in 2019? Here are a few.
High Variation
Another hardwood trend to look out for this year and next is high variation, in which the planks have pronounced light parts and dark parts. High variation floors, often made of hickory, can really give a room an old-world feel, and really emphasizes the “woodenness” of the wood floor.
Lighter colors
In the 2000s people wanted their wood floors dark, but in recent years the fashionable color has definitely moved lighter. Various white oaks from Europe and North America are common and would make a good bet if you were trying to sell your home with a style premium. French white oak is especially in demand.
Beige specifically
For a while grey or greyish wood floors were popular, but the trend now is more toward beige, which is easy to get with white oak. Beige is seen by many homeowners and buyers as comforting, homelike, and likely to be still beautiful many years later.
Ultra-dark
There’s one major exception to the general trend to lighter floors: if you’re going to go dark, go really, really dark. Espresso or ebony shades are not everywhere, but when people look for darker floors these days, that’s what they probably want.
That distressed look
There are treatments they can administer to hardwood to make it look well-worn for a cozier, more lived-in feel. Wire brush or hand scraping treatments slightly wear down soft parts of the wood and leave knots and hard grains slightly raised. This gives it a more visible texture while also making subsequent dirt and scratches less noticeable.
The natural finish
Traditional looks almost always come back at some point, and especially if they are eco-friendly. One recent trend is natural finishes like wax and oil instead of polyurethane. They are non-toxic and DIY-friendly, and spot-touchups are easy and usually undetectable by others. Before you put a synthetic finish on a new hardwood floor, look into whether natural finishes are an option. Just remember that machine waxing might work less well with the distressed texture mentioned above.
Bigger planks
Longer and wider planks can make a room feel more open and this trend has been progressing since the early 2000s. But it’s not entirely new. Large planks were actually trendy in the 50s and early 60s before carpet overran everything for the next three decades. In all likelihood, they will have yet another resurgence after the current one, just like hardwood itself.
